I was just updating the sponsors page with another wonderful person who is donating a prize to make Nerd Wars awesome, and I reckoned I’d talk about some of the processes by which Nerd Wars continues to not only grow in numbers even before its first tournament, but also take shape and change.
It’s really quite organic, which is why I think this is all going to work. It started out with just the challenges. Then dissertations were added as an option to include long term projects. Then I figured that maybe badges and bragging rights were not *quite* enough – and so I put my toe in the waters of asking folks if they’d like to donate some things so that we could have some tangible prizes.
I am still amazed at the outpouring from people. The vendors I have talked to have been overjoyed to help out. People want to be involved. They want to help write challenges. They want to help guide and judge dissertations. They have great questions. They have amazing suggestions. The other night a whole new aspect to the game (sooper seekrit!) was developed because people have taken an initiative to increase the levels of awesome.
People are taking ownership, they are proud to be a part of this. I don’t think I started an online knitting competition. I don’t think I started a Ravelry group. I think I started a community. This is so rad.
