Today’s the day. Big day, huh? Yep, big news today! Okay, now that I’ve gotten the traditional obscure (but HILARIOUS) film reference out of my system, things can move along.
WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS. You have been chosen to fight for your team in an epic battle of yarn, memes, and picture-spam! If you have not yet received your assignment via Rav PM, sit tight! It’s coming. If, when the team rosters go up, you are still floating in hyperspace, notify eyeamelise via PM. Otherwise, WOOOOOO! You are on a team, just like Dr. McNinja and Axe Cop! But with less decapitations.
I AM ON A TEAM. WHAT HAPPENS NOW? In my assorted chatting with first-time players during the tournament hiatus, the top question/question hidden as a statement was, “what can I expect?”. Here’s your answer, padawans:
1. Lots and lots and lots of hanging out with my team! Above all other aspects, Nerd Wars is a community. Even warriors from less chatty teams will go to work in the morning and come back to find that their thread has grown a new page. That can be daunting, but just keep on swimming and you’ll be fine. Get to know your teammates, reply to posts that you don’t need to reply to, and if you find yourself really feeling left behind, talk to your captain or co-captain! They’re here for YOU.
2. Fielding even weirder questions than usual about your crafting. Sometimes, we who knit and crochet in public get asked bizarre questions about what it is we’re doing. Now that you’re a full-fledged member of Nerd Wars, you will find yourself turning the tables on the weirdos when they want to know what you’re making. Before it was all like, “I’m making a sock” “OOOOh, I didn’t know people could MAKE socks!”. Now, it’ll be all like, “I’m making a felted Claptrap.” Be prepared for lots of blank stares and “ummmmmm….that’s ‘cool’…….” to replace the usual faux gushing. Be prepared to feel incredibly nerd superior about it.
3. Late nights! Deadlines! Braaaaaaaaaains. Meeting each month’s Nerd Wars challenges doesn’t just take physical time, it gives the brain a hefty workout too. Do a Ravelry Pattern Search for patterns tagged “nerdwars” and “nerd-wars”, and you’ll see why. Nerd Wars Challenges are unique, creative problems to be solved, and while most of them can be solved by using or modifying existing patterns, most Nerd Warriors develop their own patterns in order to meet a challenge. And most Nerd Warriors find themselves wanting to meet more than one challenge per month! It can get overwhelming, so pace yourself.
Double that if you’re doing a dissertation.
4. What are you still doing reading this? Go check your PMs and hang out with your team!
And, as always…
KNIT IT
TO
WIN IT!!!
Thanks for the Pattern Search tip! I’ve never thought of that before.
